    Why travel Japan by rail

Japan's trains are fast, punctual and reach places no flight ever will. The Japan Rail Pass turns the whole network into your personal transport system.

    Shinkansen bullet trains

Ride the famous bullet trains between Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima as often as you like during your pass period.

    Nationwide coverage

The pass covers the entire JR network, including local trains in Tokyo and Osaka, the JR ferry to Miyajima and many airport transfers.

    Flexible activation

Exchange your voucher in Japan and choose your own start date, so the pass fits your itinerary instead of the other way around.

    Real savings

A single round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto almost covers the cost of a 7-day pass. Everything beyond that is money saved.

    Choose your pass

Three lengths, one simple idea: pay once and ride as much as you want.

    7-day pass

A classic one to two week trip

The most popular choice. Perfect if you plan to visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with a few day trips in between.

    A deeper exploration of Japan

Ideal for travellers who want to go beyond the golden route, from Hiroshima in the west to Kanazawa and the Japanese Alps.

    Common questions

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

For most visitors planning more than one intercity trip, yes. A round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto on the Shinkansen costs almost as much as a 7-day pass, so travellers visiting several cities usually save money.

Which trains can I use with the pass?

The pass covers almost all JR trains nationwide, including most Shinkansen bullet trains, limited express trains, local JR lines, the JR ferry to Miyajima and the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda airport. The fastest Nozomi and Mizuho services require a small supplement.

When should I buy the pass?

Buy it before you leave home. You receive an exchange voucher that you swap for the actual pass after arriving in Japan, and you can pick the activation date that suits your plans.

    Do I need seat reservations?

Reservations are free with the pass and recommended during busy seasons such as cherry blossom and autumn foliage. You can reserve seats at any JR ticket office once your pass is active.
